DAVID MILNE

In the 1980s David Milne began collaborating with his close friend and confidant, John Hoerner. Through Hoerner’s Gallery in South Yarra, Melbourne, Milne began exhibiting internationally, exhibiting his work at the Spoletto Arts Festival in Italy, amongst others. During this time Milne also exhibited in Perth.

During this time Milne also founded the Manton Lane Artist’s Association, under the patronage of Sir Donald Trescowthick and Charles Billich.

In the 1990s Milne collaborated with Ian McFarlane on My Heart is Breaking, an exhibition which toured Australia, addressing the ‘Stolen Generation’ and its repercussions for the Aboriginal Community. It was at this time that he was asked to become an honorary Koorie. With the greatest respect, Milne declined this offer, ashamed of how his own country of Scotland had treated the Aboriginals when they first settled in the country.

Throughout the 90s Milne continued to exhibit, showing work in Melbourne, Perth, China and Italy. After working in Shanghai in 1997, he returned to Melbourne and founded the Swan Street Artist’s Studios in Richmond in 1998.

Between 2000 and 2008 Milne was represented by Artistry Galleries in Melbourne. During this time, his work was shown in New York and he worked on various sculptural commissions with Helen Jonas. He then enjoyed moderate celebrity, featuring in a segment on ABCs Sunday Arts Program in 2006, and was part of the Field Group Exhibition at ACGA Gallery in Federation Square.

Since 2015 he has taken part in an artist in residence program in Skipton, Victoria, where he is developing a studio and garden for artists. The project will keep him busy until mid 2023.

Late in 2019 he met an artist and gallerist, Julius Killerby, who encouraged him to “get back into the bullfight” and join an established gallery. Milne took the advice and will be exhibiting at Metro Gallery in March 2021 with a new body of work and theme.
