Zoë MacDonell

My work examines the human relationship with our environment. It questions the nature of reality and the layered perceptions of that reality. I create imagery evocative of textures and forms that appear in the natural world.

Obscure details and ambiguous objects that I extrude from specific landscapes remain a constant inspiration to me. The final works become abstract landscapes. I merge my interpretations of reality with my imagination. I also draw from my experiences of isolation, separation, intimacy and beauty.

The compositions and mark making in my paintings are informed by my examinations of nature on both a micro and macro plane. The layering, collaging, painting and drawing on silks and paper provides an innovative medium to express my ideas. Long strands of interwoven collage create string-like structures that are richly layered in tonality. Dynamic contours and undulating curves move through the work as surges of energy.
