Chris Booth spent much of his childhood reading Tin Tin comics. His love of cartoons, graphic novels, and 1950s story books are displayed in three-dimensional form, and will be presented in his upcoming exhibition, Super-Pop Mk 3, at Metro Gallery 23 May – 12 June 2011.

A mixture of painting and sculpture, Booth’s works extend into visitors’ space like the pop-up illustration books of our childhood. Distancing himself from the “high art” pop-art genre made famous by Warhol and Lichtenstein, Booth embraces the “low brow”. Describing his work as “Lichtenstein goes to Osaka”, the artist relives the art of Japanese anime, inspired by the “super-flat” movement led by artists such as Takashi Murakami.

Booth’s work, “Thwack!!! No.3”, embodies the three-dimensional, comic-inspired nature of the exhibition. An archery board stands out from its backdrop; three arrows protrude from the board, and in the moment following their release from a bow, hit their target. Booth’s ability to evoke a sense of movement and sound is prevalent, and his exhibition provides an opportunity to revisit the nostalgic possibilities of our childhood.
