David Laity’s iconic nude figures have taken a back seat in his latest show to be exhibited at Metro Gallery. This mini-series of work focuses on dogs, birds, grasshoppers and clouds. Depicted with the oil on hessian technique associated with Laity’s paintings, this body of work presents the artist’s increasing connection to nature, “I wish I could articulate my work intellectually as other artist’s seem to do with ease. Yet I’ve always found it difficult. I simply paint what I’m attracted to. Nature has stepped forth.” The paintings from this mini-exhibition have been described as ‘good natured’ portraits of fauna and the environment, with a hint of Laity’s suggestive subject matter – a fascinating development in the artist’s work. The exhibition will run Saturday 10th – Sunday 11th December, with the artist available in the gallery both days. …read more

Paul White was the winner of the 2010 METRO ART AWARD. Please join us for the official OPENING NIGHT, WED MARCH 9th 6.30 - 8.30pm. "I document elements that are man-made and symbolic of the continual march forward of progress and evolution. They almost document an end point instead of a first encounter. The imagery is presented devoid of any other information and presented in a negative space, floating and detached from its surroundings, becoming the landscape. I often imagine a kind of post apocalyptic environment where all that is left are man made things that slowly return to the earth. There are plenty of Hollywood movie versions of this scenario. I relish in pausing this moment in time through obsessive investigation, interrogation and documentation of the object - car in this case - and in focusing so fully on something so overlooked or neglected. This in a way elevates the object from something forgotten and wasted and reveals a form of real beauty. The works can be read as a comment on contemporary society, in a throwaway culture where there is always something newer or better, but often these things are made with a built in obsolescence which creates there own evolution. At the same time and paradoxically we are now very conscious of the need for recycling." PAUL WHITE - 2011 …read more

Metro presents Mark Threadgold's 2010 exhibition 'The New Now' August 16- September 5. "Threadgold’s orchids, butterflies and even children become akin to museum pieces – they become precious in their transitory beauty, buffeted by the outside storms of ‘progress’ and its attendant environmental Armageddon. If, in Chaos Theory, the flapping of a butterfly’s wings can cause hurricanes, they are as powerful in their way as the Great White Pointer, but, Threadgold seems to be telling us, there is room aplenty for all, the massive and the delicate, as long as all are treated with equality and respect." -Ashley Crawford, 2010…read more

His memories, like his paintings and drawings…read more
