Biography
Anthony White lives and works in Paris,France. His practice encompasses painting, collage and printmaking through which he explores the intersection of societal issues, both current and historical, and how these relate to the production of contemporary image making. His research-based approach to painting is combined with an awareness of surface and a preoccupation with the engagement of physicality and the found object.
Over the past decade he has exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Paris and Hong Kong. His work has been included in over 40 group exhibitions internationally,including The Cat Street Gallery, Hong Kong. His work has been included in major art prizes in Australia including, The Paddington Art Prize for LandscapePainting, The Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship and The John Glover ArtPrize.
In 2007 Anthony White was the recipient of theMarten Bequest Travelling Scholarship. He has received international residency programmes in France, Leipzig, the United States, Germany and Latvia in both art centres and museum contexts. White’s work is held in public and private collections internationally, including the Mark Rothko Art Centre, Latvia; SohoHouse, London; and Tweed Regional Gallery, Tweed Heads, Australia. During 2020White was awarded the Creative Fellowship at The National Library of Australia to research the archive of the late Australian artist Sidney Nolan for his forthcoming project STOCKADE.
Artist Statement
I was born in Australia and have been based inParis since 2009. My research-based practice focuses on engagement, political awareness and social responsibility, particularly in relation to the current global immigration crisis. This research is combined with an approach to painting orientated around the use of colour as a vehicle through which to explore the nature of humanity. As an artist I am increasingly aware of art’s important role in the documentation and analysis of our changing society, its capacity to bear witness and offer an alternative view to that of our compromised media networks. My recent work has been a response to the state of mass surveillance and subversion in global politics, including A Curious Eye Never Runs Dry,Informality Gallery, Henley-on-Thames, U.K. (2019); and Signs of Civilisation, Nanda Hobbs, Sydney, Australia (2018), which drew parallels between the
